Usually I have a hard time painting a foggy or rainy scene without the colors becoming too warm. I could make the cool colors in the painting stand out for about halfway through the painting process, and then when I started highlighting, I would start using colors that were too warm. The result was that the painting had a stormy evening or morning look, with dark, cool colors in the background and very warm colors dominating the center of interest.
For this painting, I limited myself to four colors: purple, yellow, green, and white. To get a value change, I just used more or less yellow or white. I generally used more white in the background, more yellow in the foreground. I’m surprised how well it worked. I haven’t ever gotten this color scheme before, but it’s one that I’m planning on using again.
